A Prayer to the Holy Ghost

  1. O Holy Spirit, grant us grace
    That we our Lord and Savior
    In faith and fervent love embrace
    And truly serve Him ever,
    So that when death is drawing nigh,
    We to His open wounds may fly
    And find in them salvation.

  2. Help us that we Thy saving Word
    In faithful hearts may treasure;
    Let e’er that Bread of Life afford
    New grace in richest measure.
    Yea, let us die to ev’ry sin,
    For heav’n create us new within
    That fruits of faith may flourish.

  3. And when our earthly race is run,
    Death’s bitter hour impending,
    Then may Thy work in us begun
    Continue till life’s ending,
    Until we gladly may commend
    Our souls into our Savior’s hand
    To rest in peace eternal.

Ein Gebet zum Heiligen Geist

  1. Gott heilger Geist, hilf uns, mit Grund
    Auf Jesum Christ zuschauen,
    Damit wir in der letzten Stund
    Auf seine Wunden bauen
    Die er für uns nach Gottes Rat
    Am heilgen Kreuz empfangen hat
    Zu Tilgung unsre Sünde.

  2. Durchs Wort in unsre Herzen schein
    Und tu uns neu gebären,
    Daß wir als Gottes Kinder rein
    Vom bösen Wandel kehren
    Und in dir bringen Früchte gut
    So viel als unser blöder Mut
    In diesem Fleisch kann tragen.

  3. In Sterbens Nöten bei uns steh
    Und hilf uns wohl verscheiden
    Daß wir sein sanft, aus allem Weh
    Hinfahren zu der Freuden
    Die uns der fromme Vater wert
    Aus lauter Gnaden hat beschert
    In Christo seinem Sohne.

  1. God, Holy Ghost, help us with firmness
    On Jesus Christ to gaze,
    That we in our last hour
    Upon His wounds may build
    Which He for us according to God’s counsel
    On the holy cross hath received
    For the blotting out of our sin.

  2. Through the Word shine in our hearts
    And do Thou give birth to us anew
    That we as God’s children pure
    From wicked ways may turn
    And in Thee bring forth good fruit,
    So much as our foolish courage
    In this flesh can bear.

  3. In death’s distresses with us stay
    And help us well depart,
    That we be calm, from all woe
    Hence fare to those joys
    Which to us the faithful, precious Father
    Out of pure grace hath prepared
    In Christ His Son.

Bartholomäus Ringwaldt’s hymnic prayer to the Holy Ghost first appeared in his Evangelia, Auff alle Sontag und Fest, Durchs ganze Jahr, Frankfurt a. O., 1581, p. V viiib, under the title, “A Prayer to the Holy Ghost” (Ein Gebet zum Heiligen Geist), the tune prescribed being “Nun freut euch,” now known as “Es ist gewisslich.” The rather loose 1909 translation by Oluf H. Smeby (1851–1929), “O Holy Spirit, Grant Us Grace,” appears in The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941, No. 293, and in an altered form in the Lutheran Service Book, 693, and is now in the public domain.
