Yea, As I Live, the Lord God Saith

Tune: So wahr ich leb

  1. Yea, as I live, the Lord God saith,
    I do not wish the sinner’s death,
    But that he turn from error’s ways,
    Repent and live through endless days.

  2. Hence Christ His servants gave command:
    Go forth and preach in ev’ry land;
    Forgiveness to each soul extend
    That mourns, believes, and will amend.

  3. Whose sins soever ye remit,
    I truly pardon and acquit;
    Whose sins soever ye retain,
    Condemned and guilty shall remain.

  4. What ye shall bind, that bound shall be;
    What ye shall loose, that shall be free;
    To all alike the keys are giv’n
    To ope and close the gates of heav’n.

  5. They who believe, when ye proclaim
    The joyful tidings in My name,
    That I for them My blood have shed,
    Are free from guilt and judgment dread.

  6. The words which absolution give
    Are His who died that we might live;
    The minister whom Christ hath sent
    Is but His humble instrument.

  7. However great our sin may be,
    The absolution sets us free,
    Appointed by God’s own dear Son
    To bring the pardon He has won.

  8. When ministers lay on their hands,
    Absolved by Christ the sinner stands;
    He who by grace the Word believes,
    The purchase of His blood receives.

  9. This is the pow’r of holy keys,
    It binds and doth again release;
    The Church retains them at her side,
    Our mother and Christ’s holy bride.

  10. Let those who stings of conscience bear,
    Whom sin would drive to dark despair,
    To Jesus come with trustful mind
    And peace in absolution find.

  11. All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee
    For absolution full and free,
    In which Thou showest forth Thy grace;
    From false indulgence guard our race.

  12. Praise God, the Father and the Son
    And Holy Ghost, on one high throne,
    As ’twas, is now, and so shall be,
    World without end, eternally!

German Text

Tune: So wahr ich leb

  1. So wahr ich leb, spricht Gott, der Herr,
    Des Sünders Tod ich nicht begehr,
    Sondern daß er bekehre sich,
    Tu Buß und lebe ewiglich.

  2. Drum Christ, der Herr, sein Jünger sandt.
    Geht hin, predigt in allem Land
    Vergebung der Sünd jedermann,
    Dems leid ist, glaubt und will ablan.

  3. Wenn ihr die Sünd vergeben werdt,
    Soll ihr los sein auf dieser Erd;
    Wem ihr sie b’halt im Namen mein,
    Dem sollen sie behalten sein.

  4. Was ihr bindt, soll gebunden sein;
    Was ihr auflöst, das soll los sein;
    Die Schlüssel zu dem Himmelreich
    Hiemit ich euch geb allen gleich.

  5. Wem ihr verkündigt diesen Trost,
    Daß er durch mein Blut sei erlöst,
    B’hält dies Zeugniß im Herzen sein,
    Derselb ist los von Schuld und Pein.

  8. Wem der Priester auflegt sein Hand,
    Dem löst Christ auf der Sünden Band
    Und absolvirt ihn durch sein Blut;
    Wers glaubt, aus Gnad hat solches Gut.

  9. Das ist der heilgen Schüssel Kraft,
    Sie bindt und wieder ledig macht;
    Die Kirch trägt sie an ihrer Seit,
    Die Hausmutter der Christenheit.

  10. Wen nun sein G’wissen beißt und nagt,
    Die Sünd ihn quält, daß er verzagt,
    Der halt sich zu dem Gnadenthron,
    Zum Wort der Absolution.

  11. Lob sei dir, wahrer Gottessohn,
    Für die heilg Absolution,
    Darin du zeigst dein Gnad und Güt;
    Vor falschem Ablaß uns behüt.

  12. Ehr sei Gott Vater und dem Sohn,
    Samt Heilgem Geist in einem Thron,
    Wie es von Anfang war allzeit,
    Ist jetzt und bleibt in Ewigkeit.
