Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord

Tune: Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott

Download: Booklet

  1. Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord,
    Be all Thy graces now outpoured
    On each believer’s mind and heart;
    Thy fervent love to them impart.
    Lord, by the brightness of Thy light
    Thou in the faith dost men unite
    Of ev’ry land and ev’ry tongue;
    This to Thy praise, O Lord, be sung.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

  2. Thou holy Light, Guide Divine,
    O cause the Word of Life to shine;
    Teach us to know our God aright
    And call Him Father with delight.
    Lord, all strange doctrines from us keep,
    Let us no other masters seek
    Than Jesus, with a faith well-tried,
    In Him with all our might confide.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

  3. Thou holy Fire, Comfort blest,
    Grant that, with joy and hope possessed,
    We steadfast in Thy service stay
    And trouble drive us not away.
    Lord, by Thy pow’r prepare each heart,
    To our weak nature strength impart
    That firmly here we may contend,
    Through life and death to Thee ascend.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

Tune: Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott

  1. Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott,
    Erfüll mit deiner Gnaden Gut
    Deiner Gläubigen Herz, Mut und Sinn,
    Dein brünstig Lieb entzünd in ihn’n!
    O Herr, durch deines Lichtes Glanz
    Zu dem Glauben versammelt hast
    Das Volk aus aller Welt Zungen;
    Das sei dir, Herr, zu Lob gesungen.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

  2. Du heiliges Licht, edler Hort,
    Laß uns leuchten des Lebens Wort
    Und lehr uns Gott recht erkennen,
    Von Herzen Vater ihn nennen.
    O Herr, behüt für fremder Lehr,
    Daß wir nicht Meister suchen mehr,
    Denn Jesum mit rechtem Glauben,
    Und ihn aus ganzer Macht vertrauen.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

  3. Du heilige Brunst, süßer Trost,
    Nun hilf uns fröhlich und getrost
    In deim Dienst beständig bleiben,
    Die Trübsal uns nicht abtreiben.
    O Herr, durch dein Kraft uns bereit
    Und stärk des Fleisches Blödigkeit,
    Daß wir hie ritterlich ringen,
    Durch Tod und Leben zu dir dringen.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

Martin Luther, 1483–1546, portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1533

Author: Martin Luther

Though this hymn appears in The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941, No. 224, in a composite translation, which has largely been preserved in the Lutheran Service Book, 2006, No. 497, the text there remains under copyright. For the Free Lutheran Chorale-Book we have therefore revised the text anew, drawing from various nineteenth century sources and favoring those employed in the Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-Book, 1927, No. 257. Both text and music may be freely used and reproduced for any purpose whatever, and are offered with the prayer that they may serve for the edification of Christian people everywhere.
