Born: January 20, 1586, Grünhain
Died: November 19, 1630, Leipzig

Johann Hermann Schein, though known chiefly as a composer, also contributed significant hymn texts to the Lutheran Church. The bulk of his professional life was spent as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, a position in which he immediately succeeded Sethus Calvisius. His effectiveness as a hymn writer assuredly owes much to the crosses that he constantly bore throughout his brief but productive life.
