An early form of this melody (Zahn No. 4994) appeared in New-vermehrte Christliche Seelenharpf, Ansbach, 1665, with the text “Lobet den Herren aller Herren.” For the proper text “Praise the Almighty, My Soul, Adore Him (Lobe den Herren, o meine Seele),” the tune was reworked in Freylinghausen’s Songbook in much its present form.
