Jesus I Will Never Leave

Tune: Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht

  1. Jesus I will never leave,
    Who for me Himself hath given;
    Firmly unto Him I’ll cleave
    Nor from Him be ever driven.
    Life from Him doth light receive,—
    Jesus I will never leave.

  2. Jesus I will never leave
    While on earth I am abiding;
    What I have to Him I give,
    In all cares in Him confiding.
    Naught shall me of Him bereave,—
    Jesus I will never leave.

  3. Though my sight shall pass away,
    Hearing, taste, and feeling fail me;
    Though my life’s last light of day
    Shall o’ertake and sore assail me;
    When His summons I receive,
    Jesus I will never leave.

  4. Nor will I my Jesus leave
    When at last I shall come thither
    Where His saints He will receive,
    Where in bliss they live together.
    Endless joy to me He’ll give,—
    Jesus I will never leave.

  5. Not for earth’s vain joys I crave
    Nor, without Him, heaven’s pleasure;
    Jesus, who my soul did save,
    Evermore shall be my Treasure.
    He redemption did achieve,—
    Jesus I will never leave.

  6. Jesus I will never leave,
    To His side still firmly clinging.
    Christ leads all who Him receive
    To life’s waters ever springing.
    Blessed they who to Him cleave!—
    Jesus I will never leave.

German Text

Tune: Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht

  1. Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht;
    Weil er sich für mich gegeben,
    So erfordert meine Pflicht,
    Klettenweis an ihm zu kleben;
    Er ist meines Lebens Licht,
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

  2. Jesum laß ich nimmer nicht,
    Weil ich soll auf Erden leben;
    Ihm hab ich voll Zuversicht,
    Was ich bin und hab, ergeben;
    Alles ist auf ihn gericht,
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

  3. Laß vergehen das Gesicht,
    Hören, Schmecken, Fühlen weichen,
    Laß das letzte Tageslicht
    Mich auf dieser Welt erreichen;
    Wenn der Lebensfaden bricht,
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

  4. Ich werd ihn auch lassen nicht,
    Wenn ich nun dahin gelanget,
    Wo für seinem Angesicht
    Meiner Väter Glaube pranget;
    Mich erfreut sein Angesicht;
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

  5. Nicht nach Welt, nach Himmel nicht
    Meine Seele wünscht und stöhnet,
    Jesum wünscht sie und sein Licht,
    Der mich hat mit Gott versöhnet,
    Der mich freiet vom Gericht,
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

  6. Jesum laß ich nicht von mir,
    Geh ihm ewig an der Seiten:
    Christus läßt mich für und für
    Zu dem Lebensbächlein leiten.
    Selig, wer mit mir so spricht:
    Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.*

*J.G.C.Z.S. spricht: d.i.: Joh. Georg, Churfürst zu Sachsen, spricht: Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

Jacob Weller served as pastor to Johann Georg I, Elector of Saxony, and often heard him repeat the expression, “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht (My Jesus I do not leave).” Upon the Elector’s blessed death, Weller preached a series of memorial sermons, which he had published soon thereafter. Christian Keymann took the Elector’s expression and worked the themes of Weller’s sermons into the present text, which was printed in Andreas Hammerschmidt’s Fest-, Buß- und Danklieder, 1659.

This text features two acrostics. First, the opening words of the first five stanzas match the five words of the first line of the first stanza: “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” Second, the first letter of each of the first five lines of the sixth stanza stands for “Johann George, Elector of Saxony.” Combined with the last word of the fifth line through the conclusion of the stanza, the message is, “Johann Georg, Elector of Saxony, saith: Jesus I will never leave.”
