The 46th Psalm. Deus noster refugium et virtus.

View Pointing:

To the Chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. Upon Alamoth. A Song.

1God is for us a refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore will we not fear, though the earth give way,
and the mountains be moved in the heart of the sea,
3its waters rage and roil,
the mountains tremble with the swelling thereof.

Selah.

4A stream, whose rivers make glad the city of God,
the holy dwelling of the Most High.
5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God shall help her at the break of dawn.
6The nations rage, the kingdoms are moved;
He giveth forth His voice, the earth melteth.
7The Lord of Sabaoth is with us;
our fortress is the God of Jacob.

Selah.

8Come, behold the works of the Lord,
who hath wrought desolations in the earth.
9He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth;
He breaketh the bow, and sundereth the spear;
the chariots He burneth in the fire.
10Be still, and know that I am God,
exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth.
11The Lord of Sabaoth is with us;
our fortress is the God of Jacob.

Selah.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, both now and ever,
and unto ages of ages. Amen.

The 46th Psalm is sung as the the Seventh Psalm at Matins on Tuesday. It is the basis (very loosely) of Martin Luther’s hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” (“Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott“).
